the Outdated
NARRATIVE
Despite being one of the fastest growing demographics globally, culture still hasn’t caught up. Single women are represented in film and TV as either:
-
Crazy cat ladies. Sad, lonely, rejected.
-
Cold boss-b*tches. Materialistic, frosty, high maintenance.
-
Chaotic man-eaters. Sexualised, messy, promiscuous.
In reality, women are choosing to be single because education, work and financial independence have given them the freedom to not settle. Previous generations, and many women around the world, don’t have this privilege.
Return to the
ORIGINAL MEANING
The original meaning of a spinster was a woman who spun wool to generate her own income and own property. This gave her choices and standing within her community. Over time, the word “spinster” devolved into a slur for women who couldn’t attract a husband.
Today, women’s economic freedom echoes the original spinsters of old as, simultaneously, many societies witness a decline of women's rights and feminist progress.

Behind
THE PROJECT
Anastasia Marshall is a writer-director and the founder of Rebel Muse Studios, with 15+ years exeprience in the media industry.

She began working on SPINSTERS in 2021, following the end of a significant relationship. It was in this unplanned "single girl era" that Anastasia noticed the cultural narrative around relationship labels and decided to write a script that better portrayed the full and expansive lives of single women.
Since then, debate around women's rights and bodies have only become more complex. Seeing a need for more nuanced conversation around the themes present in her script, Anastasia decided to launch SPINSTERS as a social media campaign and community, ahead of its production.
